The previous gym leader held a competition to decide the successor and he won earning the position. After awhile of being Gym leader he quickly got tired of the job and has lost almost all the passion he held earlier in his Pokemon career

Chad's personality is very gruff and aggressive if you where to sum it up the best word would be delinquent. In addition to this he is seemingly disinterested in pretty much everything nowadays to the point where most people question just why he is a gym leader.
